HistoryVolkswagen entered into the US in 1949, but it sold only two units. From such a pathetic beginning, Volkswagen sold one million vehicles by 1955. Making this possible was the formation of several easy-to-access service facilities that the new company, Volkswagen of America put up. The Beetle, fondly remembered as the Love Bug gains a pride of place among Volkswagen's models.
Today Volkswagen has a wide range of vehicles in the US - compact cars; sedans; SUVs; CUVs; Wagons and Convertibles.
Expansion
Volkswagen is the fourth largest vehicle manufacturer in the world today after GM, Toyota and Ford. Volkswagen owes its origins to the troubled times of the World War II in Germany.
Volkswagen means Peoples Car in German. The brand was designed to be the mode of transport for the common man. When Ferdinand Porsche introduced the high-end luxury car make, Porsche, German dictator Adolf Hitler was so impressed that he convinced the latter to come out with a version for the common man. This is how a car for the working class came to be designed.
Like the Ford had done in America a few decades earlier, Volkswagens managers designed a plan for making the ordinary people buy it - it was available through a savings scheme. With its enhanced fuel efficiency, greater reliability, adaptability and ease of maintenance, Volkswagen became an instant hit with the German masses.
